Water Sufficiency

Achieving water self sufficiency in Adelaide

In this section of our website, Adelaide householders who want to reduce their reliance on SA Water and move towards water use self sufficiency will find information about tank capacities they need and the types of water tanks on offer in the market.

Have a look to see how much rainfall you would have collected in the last rainfall:

Adelaide rainfall

Adelaide has very low rainfall.  And rainfall in Adelaide is the most seasonal of all Australian capital cities.  It rains in just a few months of the year—usually in winter and, more sporadically, in spring and autumn.

Seventy per cent of Adelaide’s average quantum of annual rain falls in the six months of autumn and winter.  The rest of the year is dry.  Very dry.

This means that Adelaidians wanting to be self sufficient in their water usage must choose a rainwater tank that will be big enough to still have water left in it by the end of the summer, after months of infrequent (or non existent) rainfall when gardens are at their maximum need for irrigation.

How much water do you need in Adelaide?

In order to achieve water self sufficiency, the average Adelaide household will probably need water tank storage capacity of around 20KL to 30KL (or even more), depending on their specific water consumption requirements.

“Self sufficiency” would cover some indoor water use, for example, drinking water, laundry, toilet;  and some outdoor water use, for example, garden and lawn watering, cleaning windows, rinsing walls and washing cars and pets.

Factors determining rainwater harvesting

The amount of rainwater a household can capture, store and use annually is dependant on:

  • annual rainfall;
  • roof area connected to the tank;
  • amount of and frequency of rainwater use; and
  • capacity of the tank you choose to connect.

Rainwater as your only internal supply

Rainwater can be used to supply your entire house water needs only if:

  • the tank is extremely large – typically, in the order of 25 to 50 kilolitres;
  • you are able to connect most of your roof to the tank;
  • you carefully manage the amount of water you use, so there is security of supply even during prolonged periods of low rainfall; and
  • your garden water use is very low, or carefully managed.
